HC Deb 16 December 1997 vol 303 c126W
Mr. Wills

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what steps his Department has taken to monitor the consequences of standardising insulin strengths; and what have been the results of such monitoring. [19252]

Ms Jowell

The Committee on Safety of Medicines and the Medicines Control Agency are responsible for the continuous monitoring of the safety of all licensed medicines and the safety of insulin is therefore under continuous review. Monitoring the safety of medicines includes assessment of reports of suspected adverse drug reactions, continuous scrutiny of the medical and scientific literature and review of safety reports produced by manufacturers. The Medicines Control Agency is not aware of significant safety issues having arisen as a result of standardising insulin strengths. The Medicines Control Agency and Committee on Safety of Medicines will continue to monitor closely the safety of insulins.
