HC Deb 16 December 1997 vol 303 cc115-6W
Dr. Kumar

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if she will publish the spending level of the(a) Biochemical Engineering Research Council and (b) Biochemical Engineering Training Council for each of the last 10 years. [19240]

Mr. Battle

In April 1994, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council took over responsibility for research and postgraduate training in biochemical engineering from the former Science and Engineering Research Council. The accompanying figures show expenditure (in cash) on research and training over the last ten years. The research expenditure figure for 1994–95 is inflated because the SERC funded the research on the basis of claims whereas the BBSRC uses an expenditure profile. Similarly, the figures for expenditure on training after 1993–94 are best initial estimates, as the data were calculated on a different basis by the two Councils concerned.
