Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Brian Jenkins, dated 16 December 1997:
The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked me to reply, as the Director of the Office for National Statistics, to your recent question on the number of people employed in bingo halls. The number of people who are employed in bingo halls can not be determined to this level of detail. The lowest level which can be provided is for gambling and betting activities (the classification which includes bingo halls as one of the components). Information from the Annual Employment Survey shows that there were 72,500 employees in gambling and betting activities in Great Britain in September 1996.
