Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations have been made to his Department by the Egyptian Government concerning land mines laid by the United Kingdom. [20633]

Mr. Fatchett

The British Embassy in Cairo have a continuing dialogue with the Egyptian authorities about land mines laid during the second world war. In 1996, we donated £500,000 of mine clearance equipment to the Egyptians from the aid budget. A further £100,000 is earmarked during the current financial year for additional mine clearing equipment.
