HC Deb 11 December 1997 vol 302 cc687-8W
Mr. Breed

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what steps are being taken to reduce job-related stress on staff working within the NHS; and if he will make a statement. [19245]

Mr. Milburn

We attach great importance to the health and welfare of staff working in the National Health Service. This includes recognising the effect of occupational stress, addressing the causes, and supporting staff accordingly. Through the Health at Work in the NHS project, we have piloted an Organisational Stress management tool which has been disseminated throughout the service.

The NHS Executive is currently developing this work further; is working with the Health and Safety Executive to produce guidance on Stress Management for Employers; and is sponsoring research on the best use of staff Counselling and Employee Assistance Programmes.
