HC Deb 09 December 1997 vol 302 cc515-6W
Mr. Spring

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what plans he has for further regional conferences to generate interest in sports participation. [19489]

Mr. Banks

We are planning to hold a series of regional conferences in the new year.

Mr. Spring

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport how he is implementing the OFSTED survey's findings on the need for improved co-ordination of information to young people to help them towards independent adult sport participation. [19488]

Mr. Banks

The English Sports Council are currently working on proposals for a Community Sports Co-ordinators Initiative. The Co-ordinator would be based in a secondary school with the task of liaising and working closely with all the agencies and providers beyond the schools to ensure the best possible provision of physical education and sport for pupils at school and when they leave.

In addition, the Top Club initiative, developed by the Youth Sport Trust, the English Sports Council and the governing bodies of sport is designed to help clubs build a better future in sport for children of all ages through the governing bodies of sport. This initiative is currently being piloted.
