HC Deb 09 December 1997 vol 302 c536W
22. Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans his Department has for improving nutrition standards in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement on health initiatives in this area. [18251]

Ms Jowell

Our new health strategy for England will be set out in a Green Paper and issued for consultation later this winter. The underlying principle is to improve the health of all the population and, especially, to improve the health of those who are worst off. We know that a healthy and balanced diet has an important part to play.

Improving nutritional standards in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and any associated health initiatives, are matters for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Wales, for Scotland and for Northern Ireland.

Improving nutritional standards of school meals is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Employment.
