HC Deb 09 December 1997 vol 302 c541W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the savings across the NHS from ending the internal market; how this money will be redistributed; and over what time scale. [19685]

Mr. Milburn

The action the Government are taking to abolish the internal market and reduce bureaucracy, including the changes announced in the White Paper "The New NHS" (Cm 3807), which has been published today, will reduce the amount spent on management costs by £1 billion over the lifetime of the Parliament. Savings will be re-invested in direct patient care.
