HC Deb 09 December 1997 vol 302 c516W
Mr. McGrady

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when she plans to implement the recommendations contained in the SACHR Review on Fair Employment legislation. [18591]

Mr. Worthington

The Government's consideration of the recommendations contained in the Standing Advisory Commission on Human Rights report on employment equality is well advanced. The Secretary of State has already indicated certain recommendations on which the Government propose to take action—clarification of the law on direct recruitment of the long-term unemployed and firmer powers against persistent discriminators. The Government will give a response to the full range of SACHR's proposals in a paper to be published early in the New Year. Decisions on foot of SACHR's recommendations will be implemented as soon as possible.
