Mr. Dawson

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food pursuant to his answer of 13 November 1997,Official Report, column 619, (1) when he expects to make a statement on his preferred option for the disposal of meat and bonemeal arising from the over-30-months scheme; [198201]

(2) further to his answer of 13 November 1997, Official Report, column 619, if he will make a statement on the options for disposal of animal carcases under the over-thirty-months scheme. [19845]

Mr. Rooker

The Government will announce their decisions on the various disposal options when a wide range of investigations and negotiations are complete. Good progress is being made and the Intervention Board will write this week to companies which bid for incineration under its integrated tender.

Mr. Dawson

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what guidance he has issued on the use or disposal of tallow produced from the render of animals under the over-30-months scheme. [19781]

Mr. Rooker

The majority of tallow produced under the over-30-months scheme (OTMS) is being stored pending a decision being taken on the disposal options. These are under active consideration. In the meantime, subject to the consent of the local authority, a small amount of OTMS tallow is being burned as fuel to power the rendering process.
