To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how much money was allocated to the Careers Service in London in(a) 1991–92, (b) 1992–93, (c) 1993–94, (d) 1994–95, (e) 1995–96 and (f) 1996–97; what sums have been allocated for (i) 1997–98 and (ii) 1998–99; and if he will make a statement. [19373]

Mr. Alan Howarth

The former Employment Department, which became part of the Department for Education and Employment in July 1995, allocated money for the careers services in London as follows:

£ million
1994–95 25.3
1995–96 26.2
1996–97 26.5
1997–98 25.8
Amounts for 1998–99 are not decided.

Until 1994 careers services were largely financed through the Department of the Environment's Revenue Support Grant. Separate budget allocations for careers service regions within this budget are not available.
