To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are the present functions of the Defence Intelligence Staff; and how many staff are employed therein. [18918]

The function of the Defence Intelligence Staff is to provide timely and accurate intelligence warning, assessments, and intelligence and geographic support in the most cost-effective manner to MOD Ministers and Central Staffs, the Permanent Joint Head Quarters, NATO and other Government Departments as directed. It employs 4,589 in the headquarters, the Agencies and other parts of the Armed Forces.
