HL Deb 01 December 1997 vol 583 c146WA
Lord Inglewood

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the reply given by Baroness Hayman on 19 November (H.L. Deb., col. 566–7), whether they will confirm that no part of the railway system privatised by the previous government will be renationalised.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (Baroness Hayman)

We have made clear that our aim is to improve the railways as we find them, not as we would have wished them to be. Renationalisation cannot be a priority for the Government, given other pressures on public spending.
