HC Deb 28 October 1996 vol 284 cc35-6W
Mr. Byers

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many children with Down's syndrome are being educated(a) in mainstream schools and (b) in special schools in each local education authority; and if she will make a statement. [784]

Mrs. Gillan

This information is not collected centrally. Local education authorities are under a duty to educate children with special education needs in mainstream schools, provided this accords with parents' wishes and is compatible with the child receiving appropriate special educational provision, the provision of efficient education for other children and the efficient use of resources.
