To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has to increase co-operation between the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service and the national blood transfusion service; and if he will make a statement. [40776]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The Scottish National Blood Transfusion service and the National Blood Authority are responsible respectively for blood services in Scotland and England. However, regular contact is maintained and they co-operate in many ways.

Pre-selection interviews for the appointment of a national director for the Scottish National Blood Transfusion service were held on 15 October. Final interviews of the shortlisted candidates will be held on 25 October. The successful candidate's subsequent appointment will be subject to negotiation and availability.
