HC Deb 16 October 1996 vol 282 c972W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will set up a free phone-in hotline for the reporting of suspected road-fund tax fraudsters; and if he will make a statement. [40831]

Mr. Bowis

I have no plans to do so. To obtain a conviction a court must be satisfied that a vehicle has been used or kept on a public road without a licence. The police, traffic wardens and officials who currently report unlicensed vehicles are best equipped to supply this evidence and to appear in court when required. It is, of course, open to any member of the public to alert the police to a suspected offence.
