Mr. Clappison

[holding answer 14 October 1996]: I have placed the following information in the Library of the House: prosecutions carried out by (a) Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution, (b) the National Rivers Authority, and (c) the London waste regulation authority, between 1 January 1995 and 31 March 1996. Data relating to the prosecution activity of the 83 former local waste authorities are not held centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

I have also placed in the Library of the House information on the prosecutions carried out by the Environment Agency for water quality and integrated pollution control offences from 1 April 1996 to the latest available date. Data relating to prosecutions by the Environment Agency for waste offences are not yet held centrally, although detailed records are held at local level. When the data on waste offences from 1 April 1996 are centrally available, I will write to the hon. Member with them.
