HC Deb 16 October 1996 vol 282 cc924-5W
12. Mr. Matthew Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on his proposals to reform the parole system in Scotland. [38717]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

We are determined that criminals should serve the sentences given by the courts and should be allowed reductions only if they earn it. Our proposals were outlined in our White Paper and we will introduce legislation at an early date.

16. Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement about the future financing of further education. [38723]

Mr. Raymond S. Robertson

Our policies have created a strong further education sector. Levels of student activity rose by 6 per cent. in the year following incorporation and present funding plans allow for continuing growth in student numbers through increasingly efficient colleges.
