HC Deb 16 October 1996 vol 282 cc1044-5W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will send a representative of his Department on 14 October to Orton scar; and what assessment he has made of the damage to the limestone pavements there. [40720]

Mr. Clappison

None of my officials was available to attend the event at Orton village hall on the 14 October, but I welcome the news that Cumbria county council has secured the future protection of this site. English Nature, the Government's scientific adviser, has examined the site. Although there has been some damage, almost five hectares of pavement will be protected by the new agreement.
