Combined Heat and Power

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what capacity of electricity used in his Department's buildings is generated in a combined heat and power plant; and what plans he has to increase that capacity. [41320]

This Government are committed to CHP and has recently published a national strategy which has been well received.

My Department's new headquarters buildings will both have CHP systems each with a capacity of 480 kW. In addition, the Whitehall district heating scheme, which covers a wide range of government buildings, will have a new CHP system from next autumn with a capacity of 4,500kW.
