Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many assisted places are available for the academic year 1996–97 in(a) the primary and (b) the secondary sector; and how many have been taken up. [40581]

Mrs. Gillan

The number of assisted places available for children below age 11 entering participating schools in England in academic year 1996–97 is 855. For children aged 11 to 13 there are 6,915 entry places and a further 1,899 places for direct entry into sixth forms. The total number of assisted places available in 1996–97, including places allocated in previous years, is 37,816. Final figures for take-up are not yet available, but preliminary indications are that take-up at entry continues to be high.
