HC Deb 15 October 1996 vol 282 cc834-5W
Mr. Meacher

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the percentage change in real personal disposable income(a) overall, (b) of persons in employment and (c) of persons not in employment, for each year since 1979. [40364]

Mrs Angela Knight

[holding answer 14 October 1996]: Information on real personal disposable income at 1990 prices is published annually in the United Kingdom National Accounts, the Blue Book, and is also held on the Office for National Statistics database. These sources are available in the House of Commons Library. It is not possible to calculate the proportion of real personal disposable income which goes to persons in employment and to persons not in employment.

However, information at current prices is available on sources of household incomes in table 4.9 of the Blue Book; and analyses of incomes, only at household level, based on the family expenditure survey are also available—results are published annually in the relevant editions of "Family Spending" which are available in the Library.

The percentage change in overall real personal disposable income at 1990 prices in each year since 1979 is:

  • 1979: 5.7
  • 1980: 1.5
  • 1981: -0.8
  • 1982: -0.5
  • 1983: 2.7
  • 1984: 3.7
  • 1985: 3.2
  • 1986: 4.4
  • 1987: 3.7
  • 1988: 6.2
  • 1989: 4.2
  • 1990: 1.9
  • 1991: 0.0
  • 1992: 2.0
  • 1993: 1.8
  • 1994: 1.2
  • 1995:3.0
