HL Deb 15 October 1996 vol 574 c175WA
Lord Renton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether at the next meeting of the Inter-Governmental Conference at Dublin Castle, they will seek a fundamental revision of the Rome Treaty, which although suited for the original six nations, is not suitable, even as amended, for the enlarged Community of 15 nations.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

The Government's approach to the Intergovernmental Conference was set out in the White PaperA Partnership of Nations in March. This covers the changes which the Government think are needed, at this stage, for an enlarged and enlarging Union.
