455WThe Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your Question about recorded incidents of self harm amongst 15, 16, 17 and 18 year old inmates in custody in each year since 1990.The information routinely collected from Prison Service establishments about incidents of self harm is not categorised by age. Information is, however, becoming available in the form requested about the most serious incidents of self harm, those sometimes referred to as attempted suicides. Further work is planned which will improve the quality of this information in coming years. The attached tables are based on a preliminary analysis of the information available. Table 1 lists the total number of reported serious incidents of self harm amongst 15, 16, 17 and 18 year olds respectively for the years in question. Table 2 contains a breakdown of the figures in Table 1 by individual Prison Service establishments.
