Lord Marlesford

Whether details of all category A and category B prisoners who escape from custody are circulated to all police forces in the United Kingdom and what arrangements exist for informing police forces of the recapture of such prisoners.

Baroness Blatch

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter to Lord Marlesford from the Director of Security Programmes, Mr. A. J. Pearson, dated 28th November 1996.

Lady Blatch has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question asking whether details of all category A and category B prisoners who escape from custody are circulated to all police forces in the United Kingdom and what arrangements exist for informing police forces of the recapture of such prisoners.

All escapes by category A and B prisoners are immediately reported to the local police with full details, including a recent photograph where available.

The local police notify the escape to the Police National Computer and to the Police Gazette. On recapture, the force responsible for the recapture again notify the Police National Computer and the Police Gazette.

When the prisoner is returned to prison custody the receiving prison then inform the local police.
