HC Deb 25 November 1996 vol 286 c58W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many roadside tests on the quality of motor car exhaust systems have taken place in England and Wales since 1 January. [5391]

Mr. Bowis

I have asked the chief executive of the Vehicle Inspectorate executive agency to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from Ron Oliver to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 25 November 1996: The Secretary of State has asked me to reply to your question about how many roadside tests on the quality of motor car exhaust systems have taken place in England and Wales since 1 January. No checks are carried out specifically on the condition of car exhaust systems. However VI Examiners do carry out special checks on car exhaust emissions. General roadworthiness checks are also carried out. During the 1995/96 financial year 86,936 cars had their exhaust emissions checked. During the same period, roadworthiness checks were carried out on 1,026 cars.
