To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the annual cost of keeping a prisoner in each type of English and Welsh prison. [5154]

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Tony Worthington, dated 25 November 1996: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the annual cost of keeping a prisoner in each type of English and Welsh prison. The net operating cost per prison place in England and Wales in 1995–96 is given in the attached table.
