HC Deb 25 November 1996 vol 286 cc54-5W
26. Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on investment in the Northern line of London Underground. [4030]

Mr. Bowis

London Underground re-introduced southbound services last month on the City branch of the Northern line following the completion of tunnel strengthening works and reconstruction of London Bridge station. Three of the 10 station modernisations planned at the southern end of the line have been completed, with four more to follow next year; the project includes the installation of passenger security equipment in the form of monitored help points and closed circuit television systems. A fleet of new, privately financed trains will start to enter service next year on the Northern line. In addition, I understand that London Underground's future plans for the line include substantial improvements to stations, track, signalling and other infrastructure.

Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what has been the total funding of his Department for improvements on the Northern line of London Underground during the last 12 months. [5389]

Mr. Bowis

This Department does not provide grant specifically for investment in the Northern line. Allocation of funds for investment in London Underground is a matter for London Transport. The Government provided a total of £904.55 million in grant to LT in 1995–96. London Underground estimates that capital investment in the Northern line during the 12 months to 9 November 1996 totalled £113 million; this figure excludes investment by GEC-Alsthom in new trains for the line under its private finance initiative contract with London Underground.
