To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will list figures for the number and percentage of the(a) male,(b) female and (c) total work force who have experienced at least one spell of unemployment since (i) autumn 1990 and (ii) spring 1992, and if he will provide figures by region; [2818]

(2) if he will list the number and percentage of the work force in each of the main occupational categories who have experienced at least one spell of unemployment since (a) autumn 1990 and (b) spring 1992. [2819]

Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Peter Hain, dated 21 November 1996: The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked me to reply as the Director of the Office for National Statistics to your recent questions 2818 and 2819 on spells of claimant unemployment. The available data relate to Great Britain and are shown in the attached tables. National figures are expressed as a percentage of the working age population—regional denominators are not available. Equivalent figures do not exist on the number of people who have ever been in the workforce. Occupational information is only available from January 1995 and therefore does not cover the period requested.
