To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what stage the recruitment process for the chief executive of the South Ayrshire Hospitals NHS trust has now reached; how much has been spent on this exercise by the trust; which outside agencies have been appointed to assist in the recruitment process; and when an appointment will be made. The closing date for applications was 15 November 1996. The only costs have been in advertising the post. No agencies have been appointed by the trust to assist in the recruitment process. The trust expects that an appointment will be made by the latter part of December 1996.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make it his policy to suspend the recruitment of the chief executive of the South Ayrshire Hospitals NHS trust pending a review of the provision of acute medical services by NHS trusts in Ayrshire. [5053]
