HC Deb 05 November 1996 vol 284 c421W
Mrs. Peacock

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how the Government plan to take forward the commitment, given in the global platform for action resulting from the fourth UN world conference on women, to measure unremunerated work which is outside the usual national account conventions. [2923]

Mrs. Angela Knight

The Office for National Statistics is working to construct a satellite account on the household, in line with recommendations in the 1993 UN system of national accounts. Part of this project is theoretical and will be overseen by an interdepartmental working group on satellite accounts. The rest of the project would involve asking people how they use their time, to find out how much unpaid work is done. At present, ONS is designing a pilot survey which would take place in 1997. An article on time use data in the construction of household accounts appeared in the July edition ofEconomic Trends.
