To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many(a) surgeon and (b) anaesthetist vacancies there are at each grade in England [1110]

Mr. Malone

The annual medical work force census gathers data, as at 30 September each year, on vacancies by grade and specialty. These refer to posts which were vacant for whatever reason on the actual day of collection. Figures for England, as at 30 September 1995, are shown in the table.
