HC Deb 05 November 1996 vol 284 c475W
Mr. Robert McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in what ways the Northern Ireland criminal records computer system can be accessed by police in Great Britain; and what plans he has to assist in bringing about a single United Kingdom system. [1201]

Sir John Wheeler

Police forces in Great Britain currently access the Northern Ireland criminal records system by direct contact with the RUC criminal records office.

The RUC can access criminal records in Great Britain via police national computer—Phoenix—terminals located in Northern Ireland.

There are no plans to bring a single United Kingdom system, although methods of improving access to Northern Ireland criminal records by forces in Great Britain are currently under consideration.
