The available information on offences involving the use of knives relates to 1988 and 1989 and is from an ad hoc survey concerning offences of violence against the person, robbery, aggravated burglary and sexual offences recorded by the police in which knives were involved. The results were published in table 2.24 of "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, 1989". A copy of this publication is in the Library.

In addition, it is known that in offences currently recorded as homicide, 97 involved the use of a sharp instrument in 1985–35 per cent. of currently recorded homicide offences. The provisional figures for 1995 are 192 and 41 per cent. respectively.
