HC Deb 05 November 1996 vol 284 cc444-5W
Mr. Chris Davies

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many cubic metres of Brazilian mahogany were imported annually from 1990 to 1995. [2465]

Mr. Nelson

The UK imported 62,168 cu m of mahogany from Brazil in 1990, and 45,762 cu m in 1991. In 1992 the United Kingdom trade classification no longer identified mahogany separately from other non-coniferous woods.

On 16 November 1995, Brazilian mahogany was listed in appendix III of the convention of international trade in endangered species of wild flora and fauna. Between then and 25 October 1996 CITES import permits received and verified by HM Customs and Excise indicate that 10,141 cu m were imported into the UK.
