HC Deb 04 November 1996 vol 284 cc372-3W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many undergraduate students from South Africa were studying in the United Kingdom in each of the last five years and at five-year intervals between 1970 and 1990, broken down by ethnic origin and course of study where available. [1947]

Mr. Forth

The available information is as follows:

Full-time students from South Africa studying at undergraduate level in the UK1
Thousands
1970–71 20.1
1975–76 20.1
1980–81 0.2
1985–86 0.1
1990–91 0.4
1991–92 0.4
1992–93 0.2
1993–94 0.2
1994–95 0.2
1995–96 0.2
1 For the years prior to 1994–95 the figures cover undergraduate students in all HE and FE establishments; for 1994–95 and 1995–96 the figures cover HE establishments only.
2 Includes postgraduates.

Readily available information on the ethnicity of students from individual overseas countries is available only for 1994–95 and 1995–96. However, levels of non-response and the magnitude of the numbers involved prevent meaningful information from being provided for students from South Africa. Similar considerations apply regarding course of study.
