To ask the Secretary of State for Transport under what current circumstances HGVs over 38 tonnes can use United Kingdom roads. [1573]

The following categories of vehicles may exceed a gross weight of 38 tonnes:

  1. (1) Certain 6-axle articulated vehicles and vehicle/trailer combinations carrying containers or swap-bodies to or from a railhead as part of a combined transport journey, up to a maximum weight of 44 tonnes.
  2. (2) Vehicles carrying abnormal indivisible loads or designed for special purposes.
  3. (3) Locomotives pulling trailers and when operating under a permit issued by a highway authority.
