HC Deb 22 May 1996 vol 278 c224W
Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many new rented homes housing associations will be able to start in 1996; and what were the figures for each of the past three years. [29901]

Mr. Curry

The Housing Corporation has granted approvals for 27,000 new rented homes to be provided by housing associations using funding from the approved development programme during the financial year 1996–97. In addition, local authorities may also provide new rented homes using local authority housing association grant. Current indications are that an additional 11,000 social lettings will arise from LAHAG funding during 1996–97. Most of these approved schemes will be started during 1996–97.

These approvals will contribute significantly to the 61,100 new social lettings expected to become available during 1996–97 from housing association and local authority activities under the rental and home ownership programmes.

Figures for rental provision for the past three years are:

ADP funded (approvals) LAHAG funded (completions)
1993–94 45,781 7,159
1994–95 44,422 9,018
1995–96 26,516 11,394
