HC Deb 21 May 1996 vol 278 c111W
Mr. Watson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs by whom the United Kingdom was represented at the Oslo conference in April to try to consolidate implementation of the 20/20 initiative; and if he will make a statement. [30123]

Mr. Hanley

The United Kingdom was represented at the April Oslo conference on the 20/20 initiative by the ODA's principal finance officer, chief social development adviser, and an ODA economic adviser.

The Oslo meeting agreed that donors should be prepared to support well-considered plans for enhanced spending on basic social programmes, and recognised that it was now for developing countries to put forward such proposals, initially through consultative groups and round table meetings.
