To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many metres of dry-stone walling were(a) built, (b) maintained and (c) destroyed in each of the last three years in the United Kingdom. [29149]

Mr. Boswell

We estimate that, in financial years 1993–94, 1994–95 and 1995–96 around 1,355km, 1,020km and 620km1 respectively of stone walls were built or renovated with grant aid under the farm and conservation grant scheme of environmentally sensitive area schemes. Information on stone walls destroyed is not held.
