HC Deb 15 May 1996 vol 277 c474W
Mr. Mike O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many Vietnamese refugees are located in camps or similar facilities in Hong Kong and its territories; and what proposals he has to address their needs when the Chinese Government take control of Hong Kong. [29273]

Mr. Hanley

On 1 May 1996 there were 19,456 Vietnamese in camps in Hong Kong, including 1,366 refugees, 17,762 non-refugees to be repatriated to Vietnam and 328 cases pending screening. Our objective is to have the camps cleared by the time sovereignty is transferred to China, but the needs of any Vietnamese remaining in camps in Hong Kong after 1 July 1997 would be a matter for the Government of the Special Administrative Region.
