HC Deb 13 May 1996 vol 277 c364W
Mr. Byers

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions have been held with the Chinese Government in the last three years about the future of the telecommunications industry in Hong Kong. [28946]

Mr. Hanley

The regulations and development of the telecommunications industry in Hong Kong is a matter for the Hong Kong Government. However, the British side keeps the Chinese side informed, in the Sino-British joint liaison group, of significant developments in the industry. We also consult the Chinese side on the award of renewal of major contracts, including telecommunication franchises, that will straddle the transition.
