HC Deb 13 May 1996 vol 277 c359W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations his Department has received concerning environmental degradation and pollution in Taiwan; and if he will make a statement. [28642]

Mr. Hanley

None. The environmental problems of Taiwan are primarily the responsibility of the authorities in Taiwan. Taiwan gross national product per capita in 1994 was US$ 11,604, which suggests Taiwan has the financial resources necessary to deal with its problems. Total reserves excluding gold at February 1996 stand at US$ 90.1 billion. British companies stand ready to supply the relevant expertise and equipment on a commercial basis.
