HC Deb 13 May 1996 vol 277 c358W
Mr. Redwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has yet tabled proposals in(a) Brussels and (b) Washington to develop a common market of the north Atlantic. [28914]

Mr. Hanley

We have been at the forefront of European states pressing for the further liberalisation of trade with north America—in both Brussels and Washington. One of the priority elements of the EU/US action plan, which closely reflects the UK's ideas, is a joint study which will look at ways of reducing transatlantic barriers to trade and investment.

Mr. Redwood

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if it remains his policy to create a north Atlantic free trade area. [28931]

Mr. David Davis

As was made clear in the Queen's Speech of 15 November 1995, this Governmentwill continue to pursue the objective of transatlantic free trade in the context of world trade liberalisation".
