HC Deb 13 May 1996 vol 277 cc337-8W
37. Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the right hon. Member for Selby, representing the Church Commissioners, how many (a) male and (b) female archdeacons are currently paid by the Church Commissioners; at what stipend and emoluments; and if he will make a statement. [27704]

Mr. Alison

Most archdeacons receive their stipend from money raised by their diocese which is paid through the commissioners' payroll. At the end of April 1996, there were 104 male archdeacons and one female archdeacon on the payroll. The stipend recommended by the Church Commissioners, as Central Stipends Authority, is £20,860 per annum.
