HC Deb 10 May 1996 vol 277 c288W
Mr. David Shaw

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate of the number of jobs lost to the United Kingdom economy as a direct result of the annual net contributions to the European Union made since 1973. [27940]

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

The direct employment effects of the United Kingdom's net contributions to the European Union could not be calculated without making assumptions about how the money might otherwise have been spent or used to reduce taxes.
