Mr. Roger Evans

[Pursuant to his reply 3 April, Official Report, column 419]: Peter Mathison, the chief executive of the Benefits Agency is writing again to clarify his reply of 3 April 1996.

Letter from Peter Mathison to Mr. Harry Cohen, dated 8 May 1996:

You recently asked the Secretary of State for Social Security what are the number of young people claiming severe hardship payments currently (a) nationally, (b) in London, (c) in Waltham Forest, (d) in Redbridge and (e) in Leyton. I am writing to clarify the information provided in my letter of 3 April 1996.

I regret that the figure I quoted for the number of young people claiming severe hardship in the BA Districts which include the London postal area was incorrect. The figure should have been 617. This figure is provisional and subject to change.

I apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
