HC Deb 09 May 1996 vol 277 c241W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what assessment he has made of the adequacy of the rail links between(a) north Wales and London Euston, (b) north-east Wales and the channel tunnel and (c) Holyhead and Ireland; and if he will make a statement. [28408]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The provision of rail links in North Wales is a commercial matter for the railway operators.

Mr. Hanson

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will undertake discussions with the rail regulator with regard to the future levels of service between north and south Wales. [28272]

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The franchising director has completed consultation on the south Wales and west draft passenger service requirement. He is assessing the representations he has received and will publish the final requirement in due course.

Services to be provided in addition to the requirement will be a matter for the commercial judgment of the franchisee.
