§ Mr. NorrisLocal authorities receive a single allocation for both the assessment and the strengthening of their highway bridges. In 1996–97, for the first time, an element within this allocation was separately identified for assessment, but it remains open to local authorities to determine their own priorities within the total allocation. The first three columns of the following table show total bridge allocations for 1994–95, 1995–96 and 1996–97 respectively. The final column shows the indicative assessment allocations made in 1996–97. The information required to express these as a percentage of overall local authority budgets is not readily available.
