HC Deb 08 May 1996 vol 277 c181W
Mrs. Helen Jackson

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what estimate he has made of the impact on job prospects in the engineers' cutting tool sector of the establishment of a new facility in Belfast by YG-I Tool Company of Korea. [27097]

Mr. Ancram

The establishment of this facility is unlikely to impact on job prospects in the engineer's cutting tool sector. In all cases where Government assistance is given to inward investors, an assessment is made of the risk of job displacement. This was done in the case of the European Tool company, the Northern Ireland subsidiary of YG-I Tool Company of Korea.

Mrs. Jackson

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what consultation he had with the Federation of British Engineers' Tool Manufacturers prior to approving a grant to the Korean company YG-I Tool Co. of Korea to set up a manufacturing base in Belfast.

Mr. Ancram

No direct consultation was sought with the Federation of British Engineers' Tool Manufacturers, though information published by the federation was used during the course of the appraisal.
